Microlights are aircraft that are built to a maximum all up weight of 450 kilograms and a stall speed of less than 35 knots. There are many types of microlight, the two main catagories being 'Weight Shift' and 'Three Axis'. Probably the first decision to make before you commence your training is to consider which one is for you. The best way of finding out is to have a trial flight in each one. I started on weight shift and converted to three axis. Three axis was my personal preference as I found that with their enclosed cockpit, ease of handling in turbulence and good crosswind capabilities I doubled the number of hours that I could fly in a year. For these same reasons, I choose to teach on three axis aircraft only.Below is a selection of microlights that are to be found at Deanland.

Thruster Sprint. 2.2 litre four stroke Jabiru engine,
cruise at 65-70 knots using 12 litres of fuel per hour.
50 litre tank giving a 4 hour duration.A factory built aircraft and used for training at Southern Light Flyers.

Ikarus C42 powered by Rotax 912 four stroke engine. Available as a kit or ready built. Cruises at 70-80 knots using 11-12 litres of fuel per hour. G-CECC, a factory built aircraft, now fully operational and training students at Deanland.
