Learning to fly
You will follow a structured syllabus, approved by the CAA, in order to gain your National Private Pilots License (NPPL) for microlight aircraft, and need to pass 5 ground examinations, in addition to a minimum of 25 hours flying training. The examinations are:-
Training
Southern Light Flyers
Airlaw
Human Performance Limitations
Navigation
Meteorology
Aircraft General
All flying lessons have a pre-flight briefing explaining the objectives of the lesson. Although the flying training can be completed in a minimum of 25 hours, the student must complete 10 hours solo time before he can be issued with a license, so in order to complete the course within the 25 hour legal minimum, only 15 hours dual training would be available. A more realistic minimum time in which to gain the necessary skills is 35 hours. It just depends on the individuals approach to training, and how regularly they fly. Age can be a factor, and a rough guide has been quoted that the number of hours required will roughly equal the age of the student.
You will have the same instructor (He's the one on the left of the top photo opposite) through out your training, so no problems with continuity.
Learning to fly is most enjoyable, but it is also something that requires a high level of dedication on behalf of both the student and instructor. The prime aim is to ensure that the newly fledged pilot will be safe, confident and capable in all aspects of microlight flying.
The ground examinations are taken in house and are not too difficult to pass. They do however cover a wide variety of subjects and require some self study in order to gain the necessary knowledge. All the studying is worthwhile however, as the subject matter is highly relevant in learning to fly.
